This is an ‘html-only’ version of Scribblings with no database behind it. This means it is not possible to search it. I am working on a new version with which I am hoping to eventually put back into the main site. The new version is here but please note that there is no link directly back to the main site.

Bush’s threats against Iran

Bush’s inauguration speech contained a number of slightly veiled threats against Iran mostly along the lines of wouldn’t it be great to take some peace, freedom and democracy there?1 Hossein Derakhshan, an Iranian living in Toronto, has a few things to say about that.

While Hossein does not hold a bright candle for the current Iranian government2 he does point out the hypocrisy in Bush’s choice of Iran as the next target in his crusade to bring democracy to the whole planet. Bush hasn’t, for example, been making threats against the arguably much more repressive regimes in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan.

1 By which of course Bush means the freedom to drink Coca Cola, eat at Macdonalds and elect any government the Iranians might like just so long as it is friendly towards the United States.

2 He does say that he’d probably support an invasion if he could be sure that:

…by invading Iran, innocent civilian wouldn’t get killed by American “smart bombs”, public facilities wouldn’t be looted, and women and children wouldn’t be raped or kidnapped, and overall the country would be in a better shape than it is today…

which is rather a large if given the results of the USA’s warmongering in neighbouring Iraq.

An apology

Since moving the site to a new server Scribblings is not as easy to find your way around as it used to be. It used to depend on a script and a database on the server but is currently served as ‘flat html’.

I have some ideas about how to make it a bit easier but they depend on writing another script. I hope to get around to it ‘eventually’.
