This is an ‘html-only’ version of Scribblings with no database behind it. This means it is not possible to search it. I am working on a new version with which I am hoping to eventually put back into the main site. The new version is here but please note that there is no link directly back to the main site.

Bush never looked into Nick’s eyes

In a piece in Friday’s Guardian the father of Nick Berg, the man who was recently beheaded in Iraq, blames George Bush for his son’s death as much as he blames the people who lopped off his son’s head.

Michael Berg criticises George Bush for his ineffective leadership which he calls a weapon of mass destruction. He also has this to say on Bush’s response to the destruction of the World Trade Center (WTC) in 2001:

So what were we to do when we in America were attacked on September 11, that infamous day? I say we should have done then what we never did before: stop speaking to the people we labelled our enemies and start listening to them. Stop giving preconditions to our peaceful coexistence on this small planet, and start honouring and respecting every human’s need to live free and autonomously, to truly respect the sovereignty of every state. To stop making up rules by which others must live and then separate rules for ourselves.

Which more or less echoes what I thought at the time the WTC was destroyed. The best response which America could have made to the disaster was to do nothing at all. Nothing, that is, except ponder why it had happened and why the people who did it had such a hatred of America that they were driven to commit such an act. Instead the actions which Bush did take simply acted as confirmation, to those behind the destruction, that they were right.

An apology

Since moving the site to a new server Scribblings is not as easy to find your way around as it used to be. It used to depend on a script and a database on the server but is currently served as ‘flat html’.

I have some ideas about how to make it a bit easier but they depend on writing another script. I hope to get around to it ‘eventually’.
