I’ve just worked out that the cat isn’t quite so dumb as I might sometimes make him out to be. He’s worked out at least one way of always getting my attention. Channel hopping on TV can be, at the least, mildly frustrating — the cat always moves himself between the remote and the TV set. That ensures that I’ll, eventually, shoo him out of the way but will probably stroke him for a while first. How does the cat know that standing just there, like so, always works?
I think it’s probably a rather sad life, being a house cat.
